We strongly believe that children need the

best foundations to be able to grow into lifelong learners. 

 

Our Year 1 provision adapts and develops over the course of the year in response to the children’s academic needs and social and emotional development. 

 

We endeavour to promote children’s developing independence and self-confidence providing strong and secure foundations for their school journey.

 

Here are some of the exciting topics that we cover during the Year.

Childhood		Our  Wonderful World		School  Days	On the beach

 

Childhood -
During this topic children have the opportunity to learn about everyday life and families today; including comparisons with childhood in the 1950s, using artefacts and a range of different sources.  They will also learn about themselves, their families and identity alongside a more scientific look into the human body and its sense. 

Our Wonderful World - 

This topic teaches essential skills and knowledge about Earth; its physical and human features, how we map the Earth, compass points and positional and directional language. We delve into the Earth’s history learning about changes over time, the time of the dinosaurs and Mary Anning’s impact on history.  

School Days - 

During this topic the children learn about their own school and locality, both today and in the past.  They compare schooling in the Victorian era to their experiences today developing their understanding of time passing and change over time.  They will think about why things change alongside how.  

Bright Lights, Big City - 

In this topic, the children learn about the physical and human characteristics of the United Kingdom, including a focussed exploration of the characteristics and features of the capital city, London. We also become gardeners as we learn about the plant world and think about materials in science to discover what things are made from and why.
