Geography companion project, Terms 1 & 2: Our changing world
The final year at primary school is an incredibly exciting time. The children get to show off all that they have learnt in their time with us at Westlands Primary School. It is also fantastic to see the children develop as they become prepared for Secondary School both academically and psychologically.
Year 6 is unique in several ways, with the residential, end of year production and the Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs). These are all great opportunities for the children to develop their skills. We view the SATs as a positive opportunity to show off the children’s great progress. We have found that children tend to really enjoy working towards the tests and seeing their scores go up!
Our history and geography follow three main themes over the year, with some of our Reading books and Writing units related to those topics:

Maafa and Our Changing World |
Britain at war |
Frozen Kingdoms |
Autumn Term (Terms 1 & 2)
Maafa
Maafa is a Swahili word meaning ‘great tragedy’. It is the word used to refer to the enslavement of African people and its impact and legacy. The children will learn about Africa past and present, with a particular focus on Benin. It traces the development of the slave trade and explores Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade.
Our Changing World
The children will revise the features of Earth, time zones and lines of latitude and longitude to pinpoint places on a map. Children find out more about map scales, grid references, contour lines and map symbols. They learn about climate change and the importance of global trade. Children analyse data and carry out fieldwork to find out about local road safety.
Spring Term (Terms 3 & 4)
Britain at War
Britain at War teaches the children about the causes, events and consequences of the First and Second World Wars, the influence of new inventions on warfare and how life in Great Britain was affected.
Summer Term (Terms 5 & 6)
Frozen Kingdoms
This project teaches children about the characteristics and features of polar regions, including the North and South Poles, and includes an exploration of the environmental factors that affect them.
